Where to apply for a Schengen visa
If you wish to visit only one of the Schengen countries, you must apply at the Embassy of that country. If you wish to visit more than one of the Schengen countries, you must apply at the Embassy of the country which is your main destination. If you do not have a main destination, you must apply at the Embassy of the country which you will travel to first. Visa shall be applied in the country where you reside legally. As a main rule you must apply in person at the Norwegian Embassy. If you reside very far from the Embassy or have other strong reasons for not applying in person please contact the Embassy. You are advised to make an appointment when you want to apply for a visa.

Processing time
It is essential to allow yourself sufficient time when applying for a visa. The process may take up to 3 weeks, sometimes even longer.
The Embassy advises against making any final travel arrangements, particularly purchase of non-refundable air tickets for a specific date, prior to approval of your application.
Please remember to note your telephone number, fax number or e-mail address so the Embassy can contact you when a decision has been reached.

Documents required for Tourist/Private/Transit visit
The following original documents in English or Norwegian are required. Any confirmation by fax, copy, e-mail and/or Internet will not be accepted as an original.
- Application form, fully completed in capital letters dated and signed. >>Application form (UDI)
- One coloured passport photo which meets the set requirements

- Passport (with a validity exceeding 3 months after your scheduled return to Japan. Please be aware that Visa stamp requires at least two blank visa pages and the stamp can not be attached in the added pages of the passport).
- Re-entry permit to Japan (with a validity exceeding 3 months after your scheduled return to Japan) attached in the current valid passport.
- Alien Registration Card.
- Travel insurance (or reservation of insurance) covering Europe and valid for the duration of the visa. Minimum coverage 30,000 EURO for each item in case of accident, illness, including travel home. Proof of actual coverage may be presented after a positive decision on the visa application.
- Scheduled program.
- Reservation for travel tickets.
- Hotel reservation or invitation from the host with exact address and housing arrangements.
- Job letter including attestation of salary and duration of the vacation. If self-employed bring registration of your company. Students must bring enrolment certificate.
- Sufficient funds to cover your stay in Norway i.e. bank statement, international credit card or guarantee declaration. As a rule, you have to have NOK 500 per day that you will be staying in Norway, but if you are staying with family or friends, the amount is somewhat lower.
- For minors, parents declaration of consent for travel, certified and a copy of their passports.
- Visa for the final destination if the purpose of travel in Norway is a transit.

Japanese citizens:
A visa is not required for nationals of countries with which Norway has signed a visa waiver agreement. Japanese citizens who stay in Norway or the Schengen area 90 days or less within 6 months do not need a Schengen visa. Your Passport should be valid for 3 months after your scheduled return to Japan.

The fee is to be paid in advance in cash and it is not refundable. The fees are subject to change according to the exchange rates.
In certain cases, the fee may be waived or reduced in accordance with national legislation, when this would serve to promote cultural, foreign policy or development policy interests, other areas of vital public interest, or for humanitarian reasons.
The fee is waived for visa applicants in any of the following categories:
- Children under 6 years,
- School pupils, students, post-graduate students and accompanying teachers who undertake trips for the purpose of study or educational training, and
- Researchers from third countries travelling for the purpose of carrying out scientific research, as per specific rules.
